Early Childhood Care and Education: Brief Perspective

Early childhood is the period from birth to eight years.

Brain development is rapid during early years so it is important to foster children oy

providing stimulating/nurturing/supportive/protective environment

Almost 90% of brain develops by the age of six years

The early years are called formative years as the foundation for physical, cognitive, soci emotional and language development is laid during this period.

ECCE forms the basis of overall development, later learning and wellbeing of children. ECCE focus on developing schoolreadiness in children.

School readiness is not just about children being ready for school. Parents and centres both play an important role in preparing the children for school.

Children's skills and development are strongly influenced by their families and interactions with other people and environments before coming to school.

Key message:

Transition is a process which refers to a period of change from one situation to another .


Inclusive education should be linked with school readiness.

An inclusive classroom should mean that the child with disability is in the common classroom with other children and goes to separate setting for support service .


Day-6

The early literacy and early numeracy are twO Important skills areas that develop during this period.


Literacy and Numeracy development begins in the first three years of life and is closely linked with daily communications, actions, thoughts and drawings of young children.

To enable children to understand the concepts and abilities,parents and teachers need to provide them opportunities explore their environment, manipulate objects ,engage in experimentation and ask questions and search for questions .


Day-7

Key message

The teaching of language and literacy in early years provide children ample to explore themselves as readers and writers.

Emergent reading skills include print awareness and learning print concepts, pretend reading and reading words as pictures whereas emergent writing skills include drawing and scribbling.

Children learn the basis of numeracy skills from their surroundings and culture.

Over the years, many steps have been taken by Government of India for strengthening Early childhood education and thereby formulating NEP 2020 which has emphasized on providing high quality ECCE services through the existing system (Angawadis/preschools/Balvatikas

NEP 2020 has address the Foundational stage in institutional setting, The Government of India have launched a National mission on Foundational Literacy And Numeracy called "National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN Bharat)

NIPUN Bharat, (also known as NIPUN Axom in Assam) aims to achieve the goal of proficiency in foundational literacy and numeracy for every child by the end of Grade 3. It will focus on children of age group of 3to9years including pre-school upto Grade 3.

The FLN mission will help every child to achieve the desired learning competencies in reading, writing and numeracy at the end of Grade Ill.

Key message:

There are different domains of development like physical and motor development, socio emotional development, literacy and numeracy development, cognitive development. spiritual and moral development, art and aesthetic development which are interrelated and interdependent.

Competencies are statements that specify what children will know, be able to do. or be able demonstrate when they have completed or participated in a course or program.

Learning outcomes are specific statements that describe exactly what a student will be able to do in a measurable way.


Day-10

Key message:

Children are curious and eager to learn and play, engaging them in age specific activities will help them to achieve key competency.


All Children are different and learn at their own pace so acknowledgement of individual difference is important.


Day-11

Key message:

Age specific activities will help the children to learn while doing playful activities develop cognitive, socio-emotional skills.


Activities can be done with children in order for them to develop optimally


Activities do not just cater to one domain of development but to a number of domains


Day-12

Key message 

Formal learning in early years can have short-term risk includes the manifestation of stress and anxiety symptoms among children and the long-term risks include far-reaching effects on the children's motivation,intellectual and social behaviour.


Quality Standards on ECCE framework will help the Anganwadi centres to assure quality





Day-13

Key Message:

• Growth and development  are inseparable, but they differ from each other.

• The growth represents a physical change in a child/individual, i.e., height, weight, size, length, etc.

• Development implies the overall changes, structure, and shape of a child/individual.

• The growth and development of a child are affected by a variety of factors right from the beginning of life in a mother’s womb.

• All those factors which lie within the child/individual are internal factors.

• The factors lying outside the child/individual in his/her environment are said to be the external factors affecting growth and development

Day-14

Key message:

• To have optimal growth and development, the child needs to receive nurturing care, which means a child should enjoy adequate nutrition, and good health, feel safe and secure, and have opportunities for learning from birth.

• A proper diet is essential from the very early stages of life for proper growth, and development and to remain active.

Day-15

Key message:

• All children, including those with developmental delays and disabilities, have the right to lead healthy lives.

• To grow and develop optimally children need adequate nutrition, they need to be healthy, they must feel safe and secure, have opportunities for learning to start from birth.

• 1000 days include the period from conception to birth (270 days) then from birth to 2 years (365+365 days).

• Young children’s diets are comprised of grains with little fruit, vegetables, egg, dairy, fish, or meat.

• Better nutrition is linked with lesser child deaths, improved school achievements, better wages, and reduced poverty.

Day-16

Key message:

• Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 is an Integrated Nutrition Support Programme.

• Mission Poshan 2.0 will address malnutrition challenges, promote nutrition awareness and good eating habits for sustainable health and well-being, and address nutrition-related deficiency.

• Under PMMVY, a cash incentive of₹5000/- would be provided directly in the account of Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers (PW&LM) for the first living child subject to their fulfilling specific conditions relating to Maternal and Child Health

• CMAM program focuses on timely detection and addressing SAM in the early stages.

Day-17 

Key message-

• In India, it is observed that the diets of women from low socioeconomic groups are essentially similar during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and lactating periods.

• Maintaining good nutrition and a healthy diet during pregnancy is critical for the health of the mother and unborn child.

• The nutritional link between the mother and the child continues even after birth.

• Lactating mothers’ nutritional requirements should be enough in their diet to meet their own daily needs along with producing sufficient breast milk to meet the demand of the growing infant.

• Increase nutrient requirements during pregnancy and continue a balanced diet of food from all food groups.

• Intaking IFA tablets, CA, and deworming during pregnancy is important.

Day-18

Key message:

• Nutrition during early childhood plays an important role in the overall development of a child.

• Proper nutrition for children is important as it sets the stages for them towards living a healthy and balanced life for the rest of their lives.

• Proper infant nutrition is fundamental to a child’s continued health, from birth through adulthood.

• Children attaining Anganwadi centres/pre-school quickly grow and develop, so they need healthy food to meet their growth and developmental needs.

Day-19

Key message:

• Nurturing good hygiene practices in Anganwadi centres is also essential for a child’s development.

• Children should be encouraged to learn self-hygienic tasks that will prevent in spreading of diseases, and develop lifelong positive hygiene habits.

• One of the most important good hygienic habits that children need to learn is hand washing, which reduces the risk of them getting ill.

• The Anganwadi centre is visited by children, and pregnant and lactating women, who have greater chances of contracting infection during this vulnerable period, hence the environment of the centre and its nearby areas must be kept in hygienic condition.

Day-20

Key Messages:

• A child’s development is holistic and can be categorized under different developmental domains.

• Development describes the way a child grows, changes, and develops skills- not only physically but also socially, emotionally, cognitively, and communicatively.

• Developmental domains in early years are interdependent.

• These domains or areas are interrelated and combine holistically to make a person’s developmental pattern unique.

• Developmental Milestones are behaviors and physical skills seen in infants and children as they grow and develop.

Day-21

Key message:

• Physical development in early childhood encompasses gross motor skills and fine motor skills.

• Gross motor skills are the abilities usually acquired during early childhood that requires whole-body movement and which involve the large muscled of the body to perform everyday function, such as walking, running, jumping, standing, and sitting upright. It also requires eye-hand coordination skills.

• Fine motor skills involve the use of smaller muscles of the hand, commonly in activities like using crayons pencils, using scissors, tearing and pasting, zipping, buttoning, etc.

• If a child is focusing on learning to walk, which is physical development, you may notice as much language development, learning new words until they have mastered walking.

Day-22

Key messages:

• Language development is a process by which children learn to express their thoughts in sentences.

• Oral language development is a process that is developed by using spoken language.

• Language development is a system through which a child uses spoken words to express knowledge, ideas, and feelings.

• Environment plays an important factor in a child’s language development as they learn the language (dialect) that the people around them speak and also their thinking abilities.

Day-23

Key message:

• Cognitive development refers to the way children learn and process information. It includes improvement in attention, perception, language, thinking, memory, and reasoning.

• Cognitive development skills include building skills such as pre-reading, language, vocabulary, and numeracy

• Cognitive development means how children think, explore and figure out things.

• Cognitive development is the development of knowledge, skills, problem-solving, and disposition, which help children to think about and understand the environmenta round them.

Day-24

Key message:

• Socio-emotional development refers to how children start to understand who they are, what they are feeling, and what to expect when interacting with others.

• Positive socio-emotional development is important as it influences a child’s self- confidence, empathy, and ability to develop a meaningful relationships.

• Children often experience significant and obvious changes in one domain at a time.

• Early experience with family, caregivers, and peers greatly impacts socio-emotional development.
