Part A: Presence or absence of good appetite in a child with SAM is crucial for planning treatment and rehabilitation. Children with good appetite can be managed at home. Children refusing to eat should be referred to NRC. Appetite is tested by offering specified food and observing eating behavior.

Part B: All SAM children (Weight-for-Height <-3SD) must undergo an Appetite Test.

Part C: Conduct the Appetite Test at the Anganwadi Center (AWC) in a quiet area. If the child does not come after 2–3 attempts, conduct the test at home with ASHA’s help. Communication between AWW and ANM should not exceed 2 days.

Part D: Use locally available cooked food (Hot Cooked Meals or Take Home Ration) from AWC. Do not use raw rations.

Part E: Conduct the test in a quiet area, explain to the caregiver, ensure handwashing, offer food based on weight, do not force-feed, and observe intake. Child must consume at least three-fourths of offered food. Observe child for 30 minutes after the test.

Part F:

Good Appetite: Continue management at AWC.

Poor Appetite: Continue at AWC but monitor closely.

Refused Appetite: Refer to Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC).
